Submission Guidelines

  1. As part of the curation process for the 'On The Drawing Board' component of OzMade Musicals 2008, Magnormos is accepting writer/s submissions from unperformed, rehearsal ready works of musical theatre written by Australians.

  1. 'On The Drawing Board' is an initiative to support new works of Australian-written music theatre, by providing writer/s with one week of workshopping and development resources preceding a gala OzMade Musicals concert where the results of the week will be performed as a fifteen minute vignette. The Writer/s will be provided with written feedback and a DVD recording.

  2. For the purpose of OzMade Musicals 2008, the following definitions are provided:

    1. A work of "musical theatre" is defined as 'a play which uses music, song, and movement in the advancement of the action, time and/or space.' This is a fluid genre, with many hybrid forms and interpretations. The ultimate decision of what can be accepted will be at the discretion of the Submission Panel.

    1. "rehearsal ready" is defined as having a significantly advanced book and score for the minimum of a reading presentation.

    1. "written by Australians" includes all major contributors of the book, the libretto and the score. Works with international writers credited as providing ‘additional material’ may still be submitted and will be determined as eligible at the discretion of the Submission Panel. The subject matter of the musical does not have to be that of an Australian story to be considered an Australian musical.

    1. "unperformed" means having had no previous presentations that were available to the public. Workshops, private performances, etc. would not generally be considered as a public performance but should be clarified with the submission panel.

  1. Proof of the work meeting the requirements of point 1 (as defined in point 3) may be required before a work is considered eligible for consideration.

  1. A submission of creative work to OzMade Musicals 2008 must be made by the writer/s associated with the submission.

  1. All copyright on the materials submitted must be held by the writer/s, with details attached to the submission where relevant (i.e. – when the work is based on an existing novel or play which is currently under copyright to another author.) All copyright liability attaches to the writer/s.

  2. A submission must be complete (see point 8.) and received by the stipulated closing date (see point 17.), or they may not be considered.

  3.  To be considered as a "complete submission" the writer/s should:

    1. Complete the online Submission Form during the specified time period.

    1. Provide a digital Script Extraction. This should be approximately 20 minutes of text if performed. Writer/s are encouraged to create a tailored extraction that is a potential showing for OzMade Musicals, rather than just providing a few consecutive scenes (unless of course this would be the best way to showcase the given work). The extraction must include at least two song lyrics (preferably more). It should be uploaded with the online Submission Form (Word, PDF’s, and .txt files accepted).

    1. An Audio Recording of at least 6 songs. The quality of the recording is unimportant but must be a live singer and pianist, or other live musical accompaniment. This can be submitted by post on CD, or uploaded as .wav or .mp3 files if the total size for all files is under 2MB.

    1. A hardcopy of the latest draft of the Full Script and Vocal Score which should be sent in the post.

    2. Proof of Copyright or permission from appropriate sources (where relevant.)

    3. Payment of the relevant Submission Fee (see point 11.)

  1. Additional Support Materials may be included at the discretion of the writer/s. These can be posted in with the Recording. As the Submission Panel are based nationally, there is no guarantee that all members will have access to the Support Materials.

  2. In the interest of saving trees and administration, the Submission Fee for a digital submission (accepting the posted CD recording and the Full Script and Vocal Score) is $25.00.   If submissions must be sent entirely as a hard-copy, a $55.00 Submission Fee applies.   Payment of the Submission Fee can be made online using a credit card when completing the Submission Form, or by a cheque or money order made out to "Australian Musicals Dotcom".

  3. Writers who are submitting more than one musical must complete separate Submissions (and payments) for each work submitted.

  4. OzMade Musicals 2008 will be selecting between two and four new works for 'On The Drawing Board'.

  1. In the event that the Submission Panel is unable to make any recommendations for 'On the Drawing Board' for OzMade Musicals 2008, it is at the discretion of the Magnormos Artistic Director to suspend the program for the year and showcase only 'OzMade Flashbacks' at the gala concert.

  1. The scoring and appraisal of particular works is confidential to the Submission Panel and will not be available to the writer/s.

  1. Magnormos will offer the writer/s access to the appropriate resources it commands in order to ensure a successful workshop and public debut of their work. This includes partnering the writer/s with cast and creatives, providing dedicated rehearsal space and facilities, access to a 'hot house' environment in which to develop their skills and network with other writer/s and creatives, and produce a gala concert for both invited industry and general public to showcase their work. A more detailed Agreement will be entered into between successful writer/s and Magnormos.

  2. All required submission forms and documentation are downloadable from the Australian Musicals.com website in PDF format. They are also available in hard-copy upon request.

  1. Should writer/s have any difficulty completing any section of the submission form, or meeting any of the stated requirements, they are encouraged to contact the submission panel via ozmade@australianmusicals.com or at 03 9352 0232, to discuss alternative arrangements.

  1. Submissions close at 5:00pm on the 2nd of May 2008.

Hardcopies of Submission materials should be sent to:
