Synopsis:

After the tragic and untimely death at sea of his charming wife, Rebecca, Maxim de Winter leaves Manderley, his beloved country estate , to seek solace on the French Riviera.  There he meets a young woman - (the paid companion of a New York socialite) - with whom he falls in love and marries.

Returning to England with his bride, he has every expectation of escaping the past.  However, his real troubles are only now beginning.  The 'new' Mrs. de Winter, ingenuous and inexperienced, is ill-equipped to be the mistress of Manderley; moreover, she must deal with the bitter resentment and antagonism of the house-keeper Mrs. Danvers.  Of even greater concern to Maxim, is the ominous manifestation of the ghost-of-Rebecca, who is determined that the 'happy couple' shall know no peace.

In an attempt to maintain some vestige of continuity between past and present, Maxim agrees to hold the popular, annual Manderley Ball.  Cruelly duped by Mrs. Danvers, his young wife dresses in the same costume that Rebecca had worn at the last ball.  Maxim's reaction of anger on the night is cut short by the dramatic announcement of a shipping accident in the nearby harbour.  In the ensuing salvage operation, Rebecca's sailing boat is discovered; and in it, her body.

An inquest in the nearby town of Kerrith, is ordered and duly held.  During the course of the hearing a succession of startling revelations unfolds.  The de Winters manage to survive this threatening ordeal, and their future life together is safeguarded ... but at a costly price.
